Potassium and phosphorus in food
Search for a food and see how much potassium, phosphorus, protein and salt it has, per 100 grams and per portion. The figures come from the Norwegian food composition table, and the search covers more than 2,100 foods.
Source: the Norwegian Food Composition Table 2026 (Matvaretabellen), from the Norwegian Food Safety Authority, the Directorate of Health and the University of Oslo. The potassium levels follow Metodebok: under 150 mg per 100 grams is low, 150 to 300 mg medium, and over 300 mg high.
How do I read the figures?
The figures are for 100 grams of the food as described, for example raw, boiled or fried. What you eat is the portion, which can be much smaller or larger than 100 grams. A banana weighs about 120 grams, and the brown cheese on a slice of bread about 16 grams. So look at the figure per portion in the search as well.
How much potassium, phosphorus and protein you should eat depends on your blood tests, your stage and whether you are on dialysis. Many people with kidney disease do not need to limit potassium at all. Do not cut out fruit and vegetables unless your doctor or a clinical dietitian has asked you to.
How much potassium is a lot?
Metodebok groups foods by potassium per 100 grams: under 150 mg is low, 150 to 300 mg medium, and over 300 mg high. Dried fruit, brown cheese, crisps, nuts, potatoes and avocado have the most. Rice, pasta, apple, blueberries, eggs and yellow cheese have little.
Can boiling remove potassium?
Yes, from potatoes and vegetables. Peel them, cut them into small pieces or thin slices, boil them in plenty of water for at least ten minutes, pour the water off and finish cooking in fresh water. About half the potassium goes. Soaking alone does little.
Why is added phosphate not shown?
The table shows phosphorus in ordinary versions of each food. Phosphate added to processed food, such as E338 to E341 and E450 to E452, varies from brand to brand and is almost completely absorbed. So check the ingredients list, especially on cold cuts, meat products, processed cheese and cola.
How is the salt worked out?
Salt is worked out from the sodium content: 1 gram of sodium equals 2.5 grams of salt. With chronic kidney disease, under 5 grams of salt a day is recommended, and most of it comes from bread, cold cuts, meat products and ready meals.

Questions and answers
How much potassium is in a banana?
A 120 gram banana has about 420 mg of potassium. That is 348 mg per 100 grams, which is high potassium by Metodebok's grouping. If you have been told to eat less potassium, half a banana or an apple may be a better choice.
How much potassium is in potatoes?
Boiled potatoes have about 480 to 520 mg of potassium per 100 grams, and a baked potato 709 mg, according to the Norwegian food composition table. Boiled in small pieces in plenty of water that is poured off, about half goes.
Which foods are low in potassium?
White rice, pasta, apple, blueberries, pineapple, watermelon, boiled carrot and swede, eggs, yellow cheese, cream cheese, butter, white bread and tea have under 150 mg of potassium per 100 grams. Coffee has about 100 mg per 100 grams, but a lot of coffee adds up.
How much phosphorus is in cheese?
Yellow cheese has about 595 mg of phosphorus per 100 grams and brown cheese about 620 mg. A slice of bread with yellow cheese (20 grams) gives about 120 mg. Cream cheese and cottage cheese have less phosphorus than yellow cheese.
Where do the figures come from?
From Matvaretabellen, the official Norwegian table of nutrients in food, made by the Norwegian Food Safety Authority, the Directorate of Health and the University of Oslo. It is updated every autumn, and so is this lookup.
